Natural Gas – A natural gas powered Acura isn’t likely to be produced, simply because Honda is investing in hybrid, diesel, and hydrogen technology above all else. Still, natural gas could be used in future fuel cell vehicles to make hydrogen. Thus, in an indirect way natural gas could power an Acura vehicle of the not-too-distant future.

So, although it would appear that Acura isn’t getting the same alternate fuel technology as the Honda division is at the moment, it would appear that all of that will change in the very near future. This is good news for people who enjoy the Acura brand, but want to see it expand to include options that are environmentally friendly and promote fuel efficiency.

Current models being sold by Saturn are much different from what was originally offered, but the company has managed to keep one huge attribute that originally propelled the brand forward: people are first. ION – After a decade of service, the S Series was retired in favor of the comparably sized ION. Unlike the S Series, the ION does not include a wagon, but it does include a four door coupe and sedan. Unfortunately, the car is not very competitive with similar models and GM is looking at an Opel-inspired car to take its place by the end of this decade.

VUE – A recent makeover has kept the VUE, Saturn’s small SUV, competitive. In addition, a pending hybrid model is expected to strengthen the line and talk of an all new compact model showing up in 2009 has the auto world abuzz.

RELAY – Saturn’s first minivan is a clone to models sold by Chevrolet and Buick. Based on GM’s Epsilon platform, the AURA borrows heavily from GM’s German division — Opel – while incorporating a style and design that favors the Saturn SKY.

OUTLOOK – To be introduced before the end of 2006, the OUTLOOK will be Saturn’s first bigger SUV. Although considered to be a “crossover” by many, the OUTLOOK is a 7 passenger SUV meant to complement the smaller VUE. With the addition of the OUTLOOK in the Saturn fold, GM will take a break before tinkering with the Saturn line up.

Truly, Saturn of 2007 will look much different from Saturn of the 1990s. With that being said, Dodge [Chrysler] and Ford must respond and it appears that both automakers will be fielding Scion fighters within the next two years.

The Dodge Hornet

Lo and behold, Dodge is nearing the finalization of its plans to build the Dodge Hornet. According to industry sources including Edmunds, the Hornet will be based on the VW Polo, a subcompact car built by Volkswagen and popular in the European market. VW has a plant in Mexico that likely will produce the Hornet as the company has excess capacity and the cost advantage that no American manufacturing plant can offer. If based on the Polo, the Hornet is expected to use the Polo’s 1.6L engine and be paired with a VW transmission. Beyond that, look for the vehicle to be closer in appearance to the Scion xA design, sport a five door hatchback design, and seat five passengers. Currently, the xA sells for just over $13,000, so expect the Dodge to compete at or below the Scion price.

The Ford Bronco

One of the Australian cars slated to benefit from this move will be the Ford Falcon, a full sized car that will become the basis of the all-new Crown Victoria.

While some have theorized that the new Crown Victoria will be built in Australia and imported to the U.S., this is unlikely to happen. Instead, Ford will expand the Falcon’s production to at least one U.S. plant, make some technical refinements, and sell the car as a Crown Victoria. It will be targeted to police departments and fleet buyers primarily with some residual sales for personal buyers. In addition, the Crown Victoria will spawn a new Mercury Gran Marquis while a slightly stretched and much more elegant version of the car will become the replacement for the current Lincoln Town Car.

The Luxurious Lincoln Continental

The Lincoln Continental is a vehicle that is crafted and manufactured by the Lincoln brand of the Ford Motor Company in the United States. The first time Tiger Woods played at Firestone Country Club he was an amateur, probably 15 or 16 years old. He played with his dad and no, before you ask, he doesn’t remember his score.

“It wasn’t very good,” Woods said with a wry grin softening the well-known face now bearing a goatee.

Even so, the future world No. 1 could see why the Robert Trent Jones redesign had stood the test of time and was such a favorite of the pros. It became his, too — after all, no one has had more success on the South Course than Woods.

He’s played in the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational 10 times and won seven titles. In fact, Woods has never finished lower than fifth on the South Course in any tournament he’s played there.

Small wonder, then, that many people think this week is a litmus test for Woods; that his performance at the Bridgestone Invitational is a harbinger for the state of his game and prospects for the rest of the season.

Woods, though, doesn’t see things quite the same way. Yes, the South Course fits his eye, and certainly, he’s prospered there. But it’s a different week and another year, and one unlike he has ever experienced.

“Whether I’ve had success or not … it’s about placing the golf ball in the right spots around the golf course, and that doesn’t change,” Woods said. “That didn’t change last week, won’t change this week, won’t change next week.”

Woods is playing in his eighth tournament of a season abbreviated by his admissions of infidelity after a Thanksgiving night automobile accident and subsequent stint in rehab. The last time he went so far into the year without a win was in 1998.

But there are other goals on the horizon besides adding his 72nd victory — and maybe more. Woods, a two-time winner of the FedExCup, currently ranks 111th in those standings and at this pace would be safe only for the first Playoff event.

He’s ninth in the U.S. Ryder Cup standings, too, one spot out of automatic qualification for the team. Captain Corey Pavin has said he wants to meet with Woods at the PGA next week to gauge his interest but it looks like that conversation might not be necessary.

“I’m planning on playing my way into the team,” Woods said firmly — three times, in fact — when asked whether he would accept a Captain’s Pick.

Woods’ last two starts admittedly have been disappointing. He tied for 46th at the AT&T National and shared 23rd at the British Open, which was played at St, Andrews where he had won the game’s oldest major by five and eight strokes. His ties for fourth at the Masters and U.S. Open are his only top-10s of the year.

“I’ve been through periods like this before,” Woods said. “And just got to keep being patient, keep working, keep building, and keep putting the pieces together, and when they do come, when they do fall into place, that’s usually when I will win a few tournaments.”

The legendary focus no longer seems a given, and there are technical issues, as well. Woods driver actually has been much more cooperative than it’s been in years, but he brands his iron play “spotty.” The biggest culprit, though, has been that putter that had once seemed so automatic.

“My speed has been off all year,” said Woods, who experimented with the Nike Method putter at the British Open but went back to his old standby Scotty Cameron in the fourth round.

“I’ve three-putted quite a few times, which I don’t do normally. Just had to go back to basics and practice a little bit more. I haven’t worked on my putting probably as much as I should have, probably the last couple years actually.”

Woods will play with Lee Westwood Thursday in the first round at Firestone. Interestingly, both Westwood, who ranks No. 3 in the world, and No. 2 Phil Mickelson have several ways to supplant Woods at the top of the world rankings depending on the outcome Sunday.

Woods has held down the top spot for 270 straight weeks and a record 612 during his career. He knows he could relinquish No. 1, as he did briefly in 2005 to Vijay Singh, but he’s not particularly worried one way or another.

“You just keep playing,” Woods said. “… How I got here in the first place was by winning golf tournaments, and how I will sustain it is by winning golf tournaments. Winning golf tournaments takes care of a lot of things and being No. 1 is one of them.”

The common practice of requiring physicians-in-training to work
many double, and even triple, shifts results in performance
reductions equivalent to the effects of drinking several ounces
of alcohol, according to a new study led by a University of
Michigan sleep researcher published in the Journal of the
American Medical Association.

Depending on the type of medical or surgical care they decide to
specialize in, young doctors can spend anywhere from three to 12
years in training. The first year — the internship — is
considered the most intense.

Thirty-four Brown University Medical School pediatric residents
completed standardized tests following two different schedules:
a month of 44-hour work weeks in office-based clinics with no
overnight duties; and a month of 90-hour work weeks, including
day shifts in the hospital’s wards or intensive care units, plus
overnight shifts once every four or five nights.

Vigilance, Attention

Following the month of longer hours, the doctors’ vigilance,
attention and driving skills were found to be impaired. Their
test responses were equivalent to their performance after
consuming three to four alcoholic drinks following a month of
lighter duties.

“This adds to the growing evidence that sleep deprivation among
medical residents significantly impairs their ability to
perform, although it is important to note that we did not assess
performance on specific medical tasks,” says J. Todd Arnedt,
PhD, a sleep psychologist who is a clinical assistant professor
of psychiatry and neurology at the U-M Medical School. Arnedt
works in the the U-M Sleep Disorders Center and the U-M
Depression Center Sleep & Chronophysiology Laboratory.

Three Hours Sleep

Sleep diaries and an automatic wrist-watch activity monitor
verified that the residents on heavy work shifts got
significantly less sleep per night on average than those with
lighter schedules during the study period.

In the 24 hours leading up to the test days, residents on a
light schedule slept an average of 6 hours and 37 minutes,
compared with about 3 hours for the residents on a heavy
schedule.

The residents were tested four times, in two separate sessions.
Two of the tests were completed after they had worked a month of
light duty without overnight shifts; the tests were given before
and after they consumed three to four alcoholic drinks.

In the second session, they were tested on the day after an
overnight shift that came at the end of a month of 90-hour work
weeks. During this session, they were tested before and after
drinking a non-alcoholic placebo beverage. Of primary interest
were the tests conducted after they had drunk either the alcohol
or the placebo.

Performance, Effort

The researchers asked the residents to rate their performance
and effort on the tests. Ratings of impaired performance were
higher following the month of heavy work shifts compared to the
light schedules.

Residents also rated their effort as higher after heavy work
shifts compared to the lighter shifts with alcohol.

In addition, the residents rated their levels of sleepiness.
During the heavy call month, they felt more tired than during
the light-call month, even after they had consumed alcohol on
the light-call rotation.

They were not allowed to nap on the test day or to use caffeine
after noon. All of the tests were conducted at 3 pm.

Reducing Fatigue-Related Impairment

Most of the tests took place before new work-hour restrictions
were imposed by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical
Education in 2003.

Residents now are subject to the following rules: an 80-hour
weekly work-hour limit; a 24-hour limit on continuous duty time;
in-house call duty no more than once every three nights; and one
day in seven free from all patient care and educational
obligations. All requirements are averaged over four weeks.

The new regulations are “a good initial step,” Arnedt noted,
“but the solution to the problem is not likely as simple as
well-intentioned policies aimed at reducing work hours, which
can themselves have negative ramifications,” he pointed out.

“Our study, like others before it, does raise concerns about the
performance of sleep deprived physicians-in-training and
suggests that strategies aimed at reducing fatigue-related
impairments are likely necessary,” Arnedt said.

Alcohol Comparison

Arnedt and his colleagues are the first to study medical
residents using the sleep deprivation and alcohol comparison
model, which has been used in other populations, including truck
drivers. Both sleep deprivation and alcohol consumption impair a
person’s reaction time, attention, judgment, control and driving
ability.

In a Harvard University study published earlier this year, the
authors found that interns were more likely to have an
automobile crash or near-miss while driving after an extended
work shift.

Arnedt’s team found that skills on a driving simulator
deteriorated in residents who were tested after an overnight
shift in the hospital at the end of a month of heavy night work.
The findings from these studies suggest that the personal safety
of residents who drive home after working all night may be at
risk.

“We need to continue to find simple, practical and effective
strategies that hospitals and senior doctors can take to reduce
sleep deprivation among residents,” says Arnedt.
